Initial Visit & Forms

Please download and complete the paperwork located under ‘forms” and bring to your initial treatment.

Expect to spend about 1.5 to 2 hours on your initial visit. Dr. Mathews will assess your condition using traditional Chinese methods including evaluating your tongue and pulse, taking a medical history, and asking a series of questions to determine what meridians are out of balance. With this information, a diagnosis and individualized treatment plan will be formulated. The first visit includes evaluation and treatment.

Frequency of treatments is determined on an individual basis. I also offer counseling on diet and lifestyle modifications and may prescribe Chinese herbs to help you achieve your health goals. Subsequent visits are usually between 1 to 1.5 hours.

Patients are encouraged to participate in their healing process. Relax and allow your body to heal. Feel free to ask questions, voice concerns, or just relax and unwind during your treatment. The treatment does not end when the needles are removed. Acupuncture has initiated a change in your body, and now it is up to you to ensure these positive changes are cultivated. If possible, take time to relax directly after your treatment.

The following suggestions are provided to help you have a relaxing experience with acupuncture and to assist in the nature of the treatment.

  • Bring your notes and a list of current medications, supplements and vitamins.
  • Wear loose fitting clothes. Gowns are provided if you prefer to undress and change into one.
  • Due to the sensitivity of some patients, please do not wear scents to your treatment.
  • Eat a light meal 2 hours prior to your visit. Do not overeat or eat foods that may cause stomach upset (rich, greasy, friend
    spicy foods).
  • Try to avoid caffeine or pain medications.
  • Avoid alcohol on the day of your treatment.
  • Avoid heavy exertion immediately before and after treatment (within 2 hours). Examples would be working out, running,
    sexual activities.
  • Set aside enough time so that you are not rushing to and from your visit.
  • Power off your cell phone. Set this time aside for you to relax, breathe and try not to allow the outside world to interfere.
